Linux and Novell notice: the remote admin service is not used in Linux or Novell specific server scripts.

Important notice

Before using the remote admin service, you must read and fully understand the following:

·Automatic service installation is disabled by default when the AdmWin software is installed the first time.
·As soon as any of the functions that requires the service is used, AdmWin will ask "Automatic service installation is disabled, enable?". If you answer yes, the remote admin service will be automatically installed when needed. Example: start NTinfo, select a domain with 1000 machines, check the "Windows" check box and click "scan" - the service will be installed on 1000 machines. But do not worry - AdmWin creates a log file where you can see where the service has been installed / uninstalled, and it is easy to batch uninstall the service, see management below.
·Even though the service has been tested on a large number of machines with different hardware and software combinations, there might be a system where the service causes instability, therefore do NOT leave the service running on critical systems without supervision before you have evaluated it.

About the service

·The remote admin service is a normal Windows NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 service that runs under the local system account on each machine that you manage.
·The service uses standard network protocols for communication and does not open any new listening ports. The only one who can access the service is the administrator. The service uses almost no CPU power at all when idle.
·The size of the service executable is about 500k.
·The service is included in the AdmWin self-extracting executable and is automatically extracted to the AdmWin install directory when AdmWin is installed.
·There is no need to manually install the service on every machine - AdmWin will automatically install and start the service on remote machines when needed.
·The service does not start automatically when a machine is rebooted, instead it is automatically started when it is needed by AdmWin. Please do not try to set "Startup type" / "Automatic" in control panel / services, the service has not been designed to work that way.
·The service is not stopped automatically on the clients when AdmWin is closed, you must stop it on each client, see management below.

Functions that requires the service

·SetupBatcher: DOSR, Data.Get.SAM.PasswordHashes, Account.Edit.PasswordHashes commands.
·NTinfo: properties marked with "Service" in the service column and the auxiliary section DOSR command.
·WinRemote: functions marked with "*".

Service management

How to manually install, uninstall or stop the service

·Enter WinRemote, click the Services tab and click "Install rsrvc " or Uninstall rsrvc" to install or uninstall the service on a single machine.
·Enter NTinfo, select a domain or a list of machines and check "Stop rsrvc" or "Remove rsrvc" to stop or uninstall the service on many computers at once.
·In SetupBatcher use the Service.Admin.Stop command.

Please notice: uninstall = remove the service from the service manager. The service executable "admsrvc.exe" (500k) will not be deleted from the hard drive of the remote machine.

How to see where the service has been installed

·In the options dialog, under "General" / "Remote admin service", click "Find service management log files".

How to disable automatic service installation

·In the options dialog, under "General" / "Remote admin service", uncheck "Auto install service".
·Restart AdmWin.

Problems

If the error message "Check service binary" is displayed

·Make sure that the service binary "admsrvc.exe" exists in the same directory as the main AdmWin executable
·Restart AdmWin

If the error message "SERVICE_ERROR" is displayed

·Wait 10 seconds, then retry the last operation. AdmWin always waits 10 seconds before trying to fix service errors.

AdmWin does not respond - this can happen when there is network trouble or if a machine is shut down unexpectedly during service operations.

·Always wait 4 minutes before trying to end AdmWin, in some cases it takes this long to recover from a network error.
