The file finder finds files and directories and calculates directory sizes on all local hard drives on NT, 2000, XP and 2003 machines across your entire network.

How to use the File finder



1.Select a single machine, a domain or a list of machines, see Getting started.  
2.Click the "File finder" button to open the file finder window.  
3.Fill-out the fields.  
4.Click the "Run" button.  

How to quickly open displayed directories from both local and remote machines in an explorer window



·Right-click the "Dir" column in the grid and select the "Open Folder" menu item.  

Notice that the "Machine" column must be present for this to work.

Behind the scenes

An NTreport script is automatically created and executed when the "Run" button is clicked. All parameters from the file finder window is translated into command parameters for the Find.Files command in the auxiliary section. Likewise, the selected columns from the column settings window are translated into parameters for the ResultGrid command in the batch section. You can edit the script manually, save it and run it in NTreport or from the command line, and even assign a speed button for it in NTinfo, see NTreport speed buttons.

A
Title bar
Shows where search will take place, this depends on the NTinfo server and domain selector.

Start path field
Full disk path to directory to search.
Specify path as it were local on remote machine, UNC paths are not allowed.

Enter an asterisk character ("*") for all drives. With this option NTinfo automatically enumerates and searches all local drives on each machine.
C
Browse button
Connects to a remote machine through default administrative share and opens the browse for directory dialog.

The status bar displays current connection status.

Which machine the browse button connects to depends on the NTinfo server and domain selector. If a single machine is selected that machine is used. If a list of machines is selected the first machine in the list is used. If a domain is selected the first machine in the browse list is used.

Variable selection button
Opens the path variable selection dialog.

Action selector
Options: Find files, Find directories, Find files and directories, Calculate directory sizes.

Calculate directory sizes shows the sizes for all directories at the first directory level.

File type field
One or many file types to search for, delimited with commas.

File name field
One or many file or directory names to search for, delimited with commas.

Date check box
Select this box to search by date.

Date attribute selector
Options: Last access time, Creation time, Last write time (modified).

Time mode selector
Options: Specific, During and before, During and after, Range.

Accuracy selector
Select this box for minute accuracy, default is day accuracy.

Day accuracy: return files between 00:00:00 and 23:59:59 specified date.
Minute accuracy: return files between MM:HH:00 and MM:HH:59.

Date selector
Click the down arrow to open the date selection calendar dialog.
M
Time selector
Click the T button to toggle time between 00:00, current time and 23:59.

Click the time field and type to enter time manually.

Size check box
Select this box to search by size.

Size mode selector
Options: Specific, At most, At least, Range.

Size field
Click the T button to toggle size 0 -> 1K -> 10K -> 100K -> 1M -> 10M -> 100M -> 1G.

Click the size field and type to enter size manually.
Q
Search subfolders
Select this box to search subfolders. Unselect to search a single directory level.
R
Limit items listed per drive
Select this box to limit number of files or directories listed for each drive. Maximum is 50000 items.

Limit files listed per directory
Select this box to limit number of files listed for each directory.
T
Show root directory
Select this box to show data for the root directory (start path).
U
Script: show all columns
This setting applies to the Run button and the Make script button. The Make [Aux] button does not create a full script and does thus use this setting.

If this box is selected all possible file information fields are displayed in the ResultGrid. Unselect this box to enable the Columns button. Click the Columns button to select fields and field order for the ResultGrid.

Run button
Click this button to create an NTreport script and run it.
X
Make script button
Click this button to create an NTreport script without running it.
Y
Make [Aux] button
Click this button to add a Find.Files command to the [Auxiliary] section. How to add more Find.Files commands with other parameters: click the File finder button, make your changes and click Make [Aux] again.
Z
Status bar
Displays current status when the browse button tries to connect to a machine.
